"ChatGPT degradation" is a user nickname for worse answers, missing tools or connection problems, not an official diagnosis. This guide walks through account, quota, browser, conversation and network checks.
"ChatGPT degradation" is a nickname people use when answers get worse, tools disappear or the connection fails. It is not an official OpenAI term, and one question cannot confirm it. In most cases the cause is account status, quota, browser, conversation context or network — not a secretly swapped model.
Work through these low-cost checks first, then decide whether to change networks or upgrade a plan.
Record the symptom: is the answer poor, a button missing, an upload failing or sign-in broken? Note the time, the web or desktop client, and the full error.
Check account and plan: confirm you are signed in to the account with the subscription, in the right workspace, with an active plan. Look for quota, verification or account-restriction notices.
Check service status: open the official OpenAI status page and look for a matching incident. No incident does not prove there is no problem, but it rules out a large outage.
Start a new conversation: repeat the same short task in a fresh chat without long attachments, complex instructions or custom settings. Compare it with the old conversation.
Try a clean browser: update the browser, or test in a separate profile with no extensions. Change only one variable at a time; otherwise you cannot tell what fixed it.
Check the network only if there are connection errors: if sign-in, uploads or streaming keep failing, compare another connection you are allowed to use. For company or campus networks, ask the administrator first.
If the UI clearly says the quota is exhausted, wait for the reset or handle the plan; clearing cookies or changing IP does not add quota.

| What you see | Check first | What you cannot conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Shorter answers, missed requirements, factual errors | Prompt, context, selected model and settings | The backend switched models |
| Image, search or file upload unavailable | Feature entry, permission, quota, exact error, status page | The account has been "degraded" |
| Login loops, captchas, dropped connections | Login state, browser, network, account notices | A third-party IP score is the penalty reason |
| Clear usage limit and reset time | Plan or feature usage rules | Changing the exit IP resets quota |
| Only one long conversation performs badly | Retest in a new chat, remove conflicting instructions and context | Every capability on the account is broken |
Feature access and answer quality are different problems. Do not judge the whole account from one failed tool.
Where the UI offers them, test image generation, search and file upload separately. For images, a simple task works:
Draw a cat on a white background. Do not add text.
If you only get text, with no task card or progress, record the entry point, any quota or permission notice, and the exact error. One failure only means this request did not complete.
Do not use a single trivia question to identify the model. Pick three tasks you care about and can check by hand:
Keep the same prompt, model and material, and retest a few times in new chats. Record factual accuracy, instruction following and whether material was ignored. Longer or more confident answers are not automatically better.
Answers to "What model are you?" and "What is your knowledge cutoff?" are generated text. They cannot independently prove the backend model or account state. Prefer the model shown in the UI, quota notices and official support replies.
If a third-party plugin reports a "degradation score", check what it is based on: a single answer, page labels or its own rules. A plugin result is not an official diagnosis. Never hand over a password, full Session or API key for a test.
Checkable facts: whether the plan is active, whether the model is available in that entry point, whether a feature quota is exhausted, whether the client is outdated, and whether the request returned a specific error.
Explanations that need a controlled test: browser extensions, blocked requests, conflicting instructions in a long chat, temporary service issues. Change one condition at a time.
Claims without evidence: everyone on a shared exit IP has their model swapped; an IP from a certain region restores all capabilities; a third-party score above a threshold triggers an official penalty. Do not act on these.
A simple controlled test: suppose file upload fails on office Wi-Fi but text chat works. Save the time, file type, size and original error; retry with a small, non-sensitive file. Keep the account, browser and file unchanged, then switch only the connection. If the result differs, retry on the original connection once to rule out a transient issue, then give the record to the network administrator.
A successful login after changing the network only means that request succeeded; it does not prove a risk-control release. For regional or account restriction notices, follow the official verification process instead of spoofing locations.
IP lookup answers "where did this request leave from, and how does this tool label the address". It does not answer "which model did ChatGPT actually use" or "will the account be restricted next". Common tools include Ping0 and ipdata; field meanings are documented in ipdata's docs.
For the full label definitions, residential vs hosting vs static vs dedicated differences and a trial checklist, see What is a residential IP?.
"Residential" usually means a public IP used by home broadband. Residential, ISP, dedicated, static and dual-ISP may describe different dimensions; a residential label does not prove you have the exit to yourself, and does not guarantee no account limits, extra quota or model access.
Check the network further only when sign-in, uploads or streaming consistently fail on one connection while another allowed connection works. For the full checklist and questions to ask before a trial, see the residential IP guide.

If the checks confirm a quota or feature-permission limit, then compare Plus and Pro. Do not upgrade just because of a suspected "degradation". See the ChatGPT Plus vs Pro guide or check the current tiers on the price page; official entitlements are governed by the ChatGPT pricing page.
For sign-in, network or client issues, see the ChatGPT network and account checks. If you do need to start or renew a subscription, choose Plus or Pro based on actual usage on the ChatGPT product page; do not upgrade early just because of suspected "degradation". For order or delivery questions, see the FAQ or contact support.
No. It is a user nickname for worse answers, missing features or access problems. OpenAI does not publish a single "degradation" status.
Not guaranteed. A different network may fix connection problems, but it does not add quota or prove the model was downgraded. Compare networks only for connection failures.
They can fix login loops, stale sessions or cache issues, but they sign you out and do not add quota. They will not fix every quality problem.
Not necessarily. Check whether the entry supports images, whether there is a quota or permission notice, whether the tool was actually called, and the service status. One failure does not describe the whole account.
No. Self-report is generated text and cannot independently prove the backend model or account state. Use the UI, quota notices and official replies instead.
Not automatically. Third-party scores are not OpenAI's risk decision and do not map to model capability. If the connection and features work, there is no need to keep changing networks.
Retest in a new conversation without long attachments, conflicting instructions or custom settings. If the new chat is fine, context is the more likely cause.
Use the record template: time, entry point, plan, exact error, reproducible task and new-chat result. Do not send passwords, a full Session, API keys or complete network logs.
This guide reflects public information and common troubleshooting practice as of November 2026. It does not infer OpenAI's internal mechanisms. Plan availability, model access and quotas are governed by the actual account UI and official documentation.
