Switching Codex accounts: what happens to history and projects?
Save your work and projects first, then sign out and sign in to the new account. History and quota follow the account and do not transfer automatically.
Start with the conclusion
- Conversation history, cloud projects and plan quota normally follow the account and do not move when you switch devices or accounts.
- Local code repositories and files stay on your computer; signing out usually does not delete them.
- Before switching, save important conversations, commit your code and confirm the new account's plan and quota.
- Entry points differ between client versions; the actual page is authoritative.
Before switching
| Check | What to do |
|---|---|
| Important conversations | Copy or export what you need to keep |
| Code and files | Commit to Git or back up locally |
| Cloud projects | Confirm ownership and collaborators so you can still find them after switching |
| Plan and quota | Confirm the new account's own subscription; quota does not transfer |
| Sign-in method | Note whether the new account uses email, Google, Apple or Microsoft |
Steps
-
Save your work first
Commit or back up uncommitted code and copy the conversations and project notes you need. Do not rely on client history alone.
-
Sign out of the old account
Sign out in the client or on the web and confirm the old account no longer appears in the corner or settings.
-
Sign in to the new account
Authorise using the new account's original method. Do not switch between several accounts in one go.
-
Check history, projects and quota
After signing in, check conversation history, projects and plan quota. If something is missing, switch back to the old account first rather than reinstalling or deleting local data.
-
Reconfigure the workspace
Reopen local projects and choose models and permissions as needed. Team workspaces may need a new invitation or authorisation.
History and local files
- Local files: code, documents and downloads usually remain on the device; signing out does not delete them.
- Cloud conversations and projects: they belong to the original account or workspace and do not appear in the new account automatically.
- Quota and subscription: they follow the account and do not move with the device.
- Cache: confirm important content is saved before clearing client cache, so local records are not lost.
FAQ
Are my conversations still there after switching?
Usually they remain in the old account. Switch back to view them; the new account does not inherit them.
Will local projects be lost?
Signing out generally does not delete local files, but reinstalling, clearing directories or mistakes can affect data. Commit or back up before switching.
Can I merge two accounts' history?
Usually not automatically. Copy or export what you need to keep; the actual capability depends on the client.
Does switching affect subscription and quota?
Subscriptions and quota are bound to each account. The new account needs its own plan; quota does not transfer.
Sign-in fails after switching
Confirm the sign-in method and account first and avoid repeated retries. If phone verification appears, see the Codex phone verification guide; support can arrange an SMS code at ¥10 per use.
After-sales and notes
- Account history, projects and quota follow what Codex / OpenAI actually shows; we do not promise cross-account migration.
- Back up important data before switching; losses from missing backups are outside after-sales coverage.
- Top-up orders follow the purchase notes and Warranty and after-sales.
- Do not buy shared accounts and never hand passwords, verification codes or Sessions to strangers.
Still unsure after following the steps? Contact support with the client version, account type and a screenshot of the error.
